| The Evening Hour Educators have long recognized the virtues of reading lovely, peaceful stories to children at bedtime. It brings a relaxing effect. We do not always consider that adults also need this kind of therapy. A bushel of yesterdays ago, in the summer evenings, when the work on the farm was done, a tranquility swept over our household...a time I highly esteem. Mother and dad sat in the swing on our screened in porch and we small children lay on the floor at their feet. The nightly orchestra of locusts, crickets, and their singing friends softly and rhythmically lulled us to sleep. Our mother and dad talked thoughtfully of futuristic plans for the farm and visualized and evaluated a course of action which would be most productive. Now at this latter stage of life, a new method of peacefulness absorbs me as Bud moves to the organ or keyboard and plays with sensitivity the enduring hymns of the faith. He plays well! It’s potency is more powerful than any sleeping pill He plays aged songs such as; The Old Rugged Cross, In The garden, Just As I Am, and many more. They soothe my emotions until I am in the arms of relaxation. Sleep comes easily and I do not always hear all the songs he plays. We have been told that music changes the chemistry of the brain. King Saul in the Old Testament is a prime example of this. When his mind was troubled, he called for the little shepherd boy, David, to come and play comforting music on his harp and it quieted him. What a graphic picture of the power of music!! I recognize that God in His infinite benevolence has ordained this precious gift to humanity. May He be praised forever! Maxine Tolbert Trigleth |
